Final Project 2024-2025 MOOC
By Madeline Dagnes

About Me.

In the little village where my students live, it is our responsibility as educators to demonstrate to them that there is much to discover and that not all places are the same and not all people live the same way. Holidays are just one aspect of this. In order to teach students about a nonreligious celebration with a rich history, I chose Thanksgiving as the holiday topic.

My final assignment is a lesson plan I made on an American holiday that honors gratitude and appreciation. The lesson's goal is to have students investigate and understand the significance of other cultures' holidays, such as Thanksgiving represents. This lesson's goal is to guide students in discovering a world outside of their community. In addition to teaching children about a holiday I grew up celebrating, this will also help them comprehend the significance of expressing thanks and various ethnic tales and viewpoints.

Although the children should enjoy and learn about other important cultural distinctions, we believed that teaching them how to express gratitude would inspire them to live with this lesson for the rest of their lives. For this reason, the bilingual coordinator, myself, and the English teacher for the second grade determined that a Thanksgiving lesson plan would be appropriate for the students.

Education Information

Class:

Level:

This is a second grade classroom in a Bilingual school.

For the students, this is a basic user level at the A2 range. They are familiar with popular phrases and sentences. Additionally, they are able to adapt their level of comprehension to everyday situations.

Topic:

The subject at hand is American Thanksgiving. This decision was made by my bilingual coordinator three weeks before the holiday was celebrated. The purpose of this was to encourage children to show respect and understanding for the other cultures in their surroundings. She requested that I write a lesson outlining the holiday's meaning for both my family and I as well as for the nation.

Timing:

This is a 45 minute class session so this will be a 45 minute lesson.

1.) Introduce topic and flashcards (5 Minutes)

2.) Show slideshow (10 Minutes)

3.) Review flashcards again (5 Minutes)

4.) Play word search (10 Minutes)

5.) Show answer key for the word search (2 Minutes)

6.) do feather activity (10 Minutes)

7.) Wrap it up with sharing what we are grateful for (3 Minutes)

Students will be able to comprehend and use the new Thanksgiving vocabulary through exercises like word search and the feather printable activity.

Working together with the teacher and coordinator during the lesson will accomplish this. The intention is for the students to learn the material and retain it over the long run, not just remember it.
